One-Third of Drunk Driving Crashes Occur During Summer

According to data from the National Safety Council, the summer months often have the highest number of police-reported crashes throughout the year. With more road trips, teen drivers, and construction projects, there is no shortage of hazards on the road. Unfortunately, though, the freedom that comes with summer break may also result in higher rates of drunk driving accidents. In 2020, nearly one-third of all alcohol-related crashes occurred from June to August.

Why is Drunk Driving More Common in the Summer?

There are a few reasons for this increased risk; one of the most common is an increased number of social events during the summer that may involve alcohol consumption. Weddings, graduations, and family reunions are just a few examples.

Additionally, people tend to travel more during the summer months, leading to driving longer distances after drinking. Warmer weather may also mean that people are more likely to drink outdoors, where it can be harder to track how much alcohol they’re consuming.

The Impact of Summer Holidays on Drunk Driving

Certain holidays also play a role in increasing the risk of drunk driving. Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day are all holidays that see an uptick in alcohol sales and consumption. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Fatality and Injury Reporting System Tool, 1,290 drunk driving-related fatalities were reported during these holiday periods in 2019. Furthermore, the NHTSA reports that 38% of fatalities during the Fourth of July involve a drunk driver.

These crash causes are 100% preventable. During this time of year, it is imperative to take the steps necessary to reduce drunk driving. For example, plan ahead with a designated driver or other safe alternatives to drinking and driving like calling an Uber, Lyft, or taxi.
